In this lesson , Marissa gave us some extra time to complete editing and adding music to our video advertisements. Our group decided to make our product black and white and we also had to convert you tube video music into mp3 files for our video.
This is our file completed and uploaded to youtube.

Photography memory check
1) What is ISO and what does it effect?
- ISO controls the detail that is contained in the photograph.
2)When would we use the 'P' control setting on the camera mode dial?
-P stands for program , the camera selects the settings for shooting a certain scene/object such as the aperture and shutter speed.
3)Name two important considerations when attaching the tripod base-plate to the bottom of the camera?
-It is screwed on properly, the arrows have to point towards the lens.
4)Name three important considerations when using a red-head lighting kit?
-let it cool down before putting it away, make sure to not touch the barn doors with yours hands as it could burn and don't touch the bulb.
5)When focusing the camera, what do we place on the object/subject to ensure it is the centre of focus?
-a green rectangle/square
6)Name two techniques we can use to adjust the brightness and contrast of a photograph?
-Aperture,Shutter speed,ISO.

Video evaluation
To begin with we all got put into groups of 3 or 4 , i was placed with Tom and Damon. We had the task of researching different advertisements and planning our own.As a group we decided that Tom would do the filming , i would do the acting and Damon would do the editing along with some acting.
We researched different types of adverts , what made them effective and how to advertise a product successfully. In lessons with Faye we learnt about sound terminology , such as tempo - the speed of a song , keys such as major and minor and also diegetic and non diegetic soinds.Diegetic sounds consist of sounds you can see (you know where theyve come from) whereas none diegetic sounds are sounds you cannot see , such as a voiceover or background music.Advertisements generally use both to make good content.
Our main task was to come up with our own advert idea that would match the freak or unique brief.
Our group originally decided to advertise McDonalds food using a clown , but after looking at some research and talking to Marissa we thought this to be considered as copyright and against legislation rules.
After more consideration we decided to keep our idea of using a clown , but to change the product we were going to advertise.Eventually we came up with our own brand of shampoo called 'Good for you shampoo' along with our slogan 'shampoo that's good for you'.
We each designed our own labels but decided to use Tom's as it looked the best and more professional.

The plan was to film me (as the clown) following Damon around our chosen areas of the college , however eventually i would end up in the seating area on E floor looking sad .Damon would then sit next to me and hand me the bottle of shampoo.I would then transform back to how i usually look and the shampoo will have fixed my hair. The final clip on the advert would be a close up shot of the shampoo bottle.
Our next task was to fill out all the important information such as location recce's , a storyboard, a health and safety form for filming and a proposal.
Once we had all the plans we set out for filming. We were given periods of 45 minutes to film , but our group managed to film all of our advertisement within the first 45 minutes ,so we got back onto the computers to create our skeleton edits.
A skeleton edit is all of the video clips put together without effects or sound .
Next , we had to start the basics of editing for our advertisements such as putting a slow motion edit on one of the clips and testing out what it would look like in black and white.
Marissa also gave us some homework to find some music / sound effects for our advertisement.
Now all we have to do is watch them and present our final product to the class.

If i could improve on this ,i think i would spend more time planning with the storyboards and probably ask to choose our own groups , as i think everyone could benefit from this working with people they are more familiar with to produce work to the best of our ability.I do agree with being put in random groups to get to know other people better ,however this can cause problems such as awkwardness not dieing down for a while and shyness that doesnt fade until the last lesson. Therefore it can affect the final product.

Print/Magazine advert evaluation
For the magazine advert , i produced an advertisement for a perfume called Ghost.
To begin with i researched 10 freaky or unique images to get some inspiration.Examples of these include , silhouettes of horses , freaky photo shopped hands and other twisted photographs. This research enabled me to start thinking of ideas for my advertisement. As i am fond of them , i chose the horse idea , except i decided that i would be producing/creating a ghost horse.I thought that this would fit in with the perfume as that too is called 'Ghost'.
During Mark's lessons we had to bring in and photograph 6 objects that could be related to our advertisement. For this i chose a perfume bottle, model horse, shampoo bottle ,top hat, glasses and a teddy bear.We had to photograph these by creating a seamless background and by using the 'red head' lights.Other equipment we used was a camera, tripod and SD card.
My idea for this advertisement also involved work from home , i had to take pictures of some horses whilst at my friends farm , and from these photos decide which one would be good enough to be a ghost horse.I had to discuss this with Mark and with other students and i finally decided upon the one that was of the best quality and one that was clear enough to cut around.
After i had my photos , i had the challenge of producing the magazine advertisement on Photoshop.I had a few challenges whilst creating this advertisement , such as cutting around the horse , changing the background and deciding where to put the perfume bottle on the advertisement. My original design for the advertisement looked to plain to begin with , but after more discussion with others i decided to change the background to something that would make the product/overall idea stand out.
I learnt a lot of skills whilst creating this advertisement , such as skills on Photoshop and also some skills for design work. However , i do feel that i could improve my work from looking back at my final piece. To improve , i think i could altogether choose something to advertise that would be less consuming on Photoshop and definitely spend more time on planning and design work.By doing this i can produce work that is more sensible to produce and reflects the more creative side of me.
Below i have put all of my work from this advertisement ,such as the 6 photographs and what they looked like after they were edited. Also i have put my final piece and what it looked like before i decided to improve it.

Photography Proposal
After completing my research i have decided that for my advertisement i will be advertising a perfume bottle (ghost) . In order to reach the freak or unique brief/qualifications i have decided to advertise the perfume bottle by using the idea of a galloping ghost horse.I intend to produce this by taking a photo of my friends horse whilst it is in the field.
Then after i get the canter/gallop shot i will use my Photoshop skills to make the horse look like a ghost and add the perfume bottle .Which i will then combine with a photo of the ghost perfume (that i'll take in college).
The items i will be taking photos of in college are:
-Perfume bottle
-Model horse
-Top hat
-Shampoo bottle
-Teddy bear
-Glasses
I chose these items as the perfume bottle and model horse would be relevant to my advert and also i needed a photo of the shampoo bottle for my video advert in Marissa's lesson.
The equipment i will need to photograph my props is a seamless background (white paper , table, pins ) , red head lights (instead of studio lights), a tripod , a camera and an SD card.I will take the photos once they are placed in the center of the seamless background and the lighting is set up.
The Photoshop techniques i will need to use the marquee tool , free form pen tool to cut out the horse, the desaturate option and opacity to make the horse look like a ghost. For the photos of the props i will need to use levels and curves to adjust the light levels of the images and then the free-form pen tool to cut these out.
The obstacles i may face are taking the canter/gallop shot of my friends horse , the weather also needs to be taken into consideration when shooting this as well.I will need to ensure the lighting and editing of my photos is of a good quality and i need to make sure that i bring all of my props in.
I expect the shoot to take 30-40 minutes plus about 15-10 minutes when taking the photograph of the horse.+

Photography week 4
To start of the lesson we had a 'memory check' to see what we have remembered.
1)Would we use a large or small aperture to achieve a shallow depth of field?
- Large aperture
2)When would we use the 'S' control setting one the camera mode dial.
-To slow down or speed up the shutter speed.
3)What do we to make the camera achieve focus?
-Press down the shutter button lightly
4)Name 3 items needed when producing a seamless background lighting set up.
-White paper/sheet, red head or studio lights and a tripod to put the camera on.
5)When focusing the camera, what do we place on the object/subject to ensure it is in the center of focus?
-A green rectangle appears.
6)What must we do when we finish using the light to ensure it doesn't get broken?
-Let it cool down first.
For the rest of the lesson we finished off our freaky/ unique images on photoshop , some of us had already started these in Owain's lesson on wednesday. We also had to finish our proposals from a previous lesson with Mark , making sure we had over 400 words. For early finishers such as myself , we had the chance to get a head start on making our powerpoint presentations ready for next week when we will have to show both our tutors and fellow students our work that we had created.
Below i have put my final photography piece that i have created and the plan/ sketch for it.

Creating a magazine advert
In our 2 sessions with Owain today, we had to design our magazine advert on Photoshop using the photos we took with Mark on Friday. The product i wanted to advertise is a type of Ghost perfume.,My freaky/unique idea to advertise this was to create a ghost horse on Photoshop.I achieved this by using some of my own personal photography that i do at home (to get the horse picture) and then i combined this with the photograph of the perfume bottle that i took on Friday.
The original pictures are shown below, along with the planning sheet i had , which i had to draw a rough copy of my advertisement on.
The original pictures are shown below, along with the planning sheet i had , which i had to draw a rough copy of my advertisement on.
My task now was to create this advertisement on Photoshop.I had to research magazine advert sizes , the measurements i chose were 13 centimeters- height and 18 centimeters in length.Creating my landscape advertisement.
Some disadvantages of creating my advert were cutting out the horse using the free form pen tool , as this took a few attempts and quite a bit of time; This then also had to be done for the perfume bottle.
The successful part of my design had to be the font which i got from the website (DaFont) and also actually transforming the horse into a ghost.I did this by using the desaturate option and i changed the opacity down to 50%.
I used a grey background as its quite a mysterious but dull colour so it makes other aspects such as the font stand out more. However i did leave the perfume bottle in its original colour , as i wanted it to overall stand out more than the rest. This is because the main goal is to advertise the product.
Looking back on my work today , id say to improve i would need more practice/development of my overall Photoshop skills and i also need to choose more dramatic ideas for projects such as this to ensure that i can express my full creative potential.
During Mark's photography lesson i decided to improve this advert to make it fit the freak or unique brief more.To do this i added a different background that i found from google images (so this is not mine).I Have changed the position of the horse by rotating it slightly and i decided to make the perfume bottle bigger.

Filming Our shampoo advert (Marissa's lesson)
Today, after a lot of preparation and planning , we finally got to video/film our advertisements. Our group was advertising our shampoo product (Good for you Shampoo).Using our previously made storyboard , we were given 45 minute periods to film , coming back to the room to upload footage and then go back out again.
We were told to take 3 shots of each scene , so that we had back up material (in case the first take had gone wrong) and we had to ensure that we included a variety of shots whilst filming the different scenes.
My group managed to film everything that we needed to film within the first 45 minutes , which gave us the chance to get a head start with uploading all of our footage on to the editing software (Adobe premiere cs6).once we had imported the footage on to the software , our external hard drives and onto the Computers hard drive (C) we got a chance to start with some basic editing. We had to backup our footage on to the computer drive (C) and onto our external hard drives , so that we could reduce the chance of losing important files.
Once our footage was imported onto the software, we had the job of looking at all of the clips , selecting the best one out of each take and then set where the chosen clip would start and end when played. This enabled us to shorten the clips (to fit the 15-30 second limit) and also to reduce errors and mistakes. This also made the clips combined look more professional and overall smarter.
Next week , we will be able to start adding effects and sound to our video .

Photographing 6 objects
Today we had to take 6 or more photos for our advertisement of products that could be relevant to it.
Our first task was to do a quick photography quiz about the different rules of photography and certain aspects about a camera.Such as what the letters P ,A,S,M stand for (Aperture,Shutter speed,Program and Manual).
The 6 objects i bought in for the photography session were a model horse , some perfume , a teddy bear , a hat , a shampoo bottle and some glasses. To take these photos we had to set up a table along with two pieces of A3 paper ; one being pinned to a back wall to create a curve in the paper. This helps reflect more light and also reduces shadows. The next thing we had to set up for the photo shoot was a 'red head light' , (usually used for filming and producing videos) this light was shone onto the paper to add extra light to overall produce a better quality photo. This is also known as a 'Seamless Background'.Seamless Backgrounds act as backdrops that don't have any edges, and they are usually made of one continual piece of material or paper. We use a clean white background as it makes it a lot easier for editing in photoshop.
After setting this equipment up we had to set up the tripods and attach the cameras.Using the knowledge of tripods we had earned from video lessons with Marissa , we quickly got set up and were ready to take the photos. The main aim was to take at least 6 - 12 photos .We took it in turns to take the photos each time remembering to make sure the camera was focused by pressing down the shutter button once and then taking the photo. We also had to ensure that we changed memory cards so that no ones work got mixed up.
To shoot our photos we had to set the mode on the mode dial to 'program' or 'P' .Then we had to go onto the menu option on the camera , select ISO and then change this to 100.a lower ISO takes a better quality image.
In our second session we were taught how to edit the photos briefly.Instead of using editing techniques such as adjusting the brightness or contrast, we were taught to use 'Levels' and 'Curves'.
To begin with we had to open up one our images onto Photoshop using 'Browse in bridge' found in the file option. You then have to double click on a photo of your choice and this will open the file/ image onto photoshop ready to edit.Next you have to go onto 'image' and 'adjustments' then 'levels'.A graph will appear with 3 little triangle cursors.Move the black and white cursors to the start/end of each peak on the graph, then move the middle arrow until the background goes white.
To use Curves you have to again go onto 'image' and 'adjustment' then onto 'Curves'. When this opens up another graph will appear; again move the triangle cursors to the peaks.Set a point on the middle of the line and another one further down , continuing with one close by to this drag the line. This again like 'levels' should adjust the brightness and contrast on the picture. An alternative tool to help is also the white coloured pen shown underneath the curves graph.Click this and then click areas on the picture where you would like it to be brighter and for shadows to be reduced. This also helps your photo to appear more white.
Overall what Mark was trying to teach us here when editing photos was to reduce the use of the brightness and contrast tool to edit photos ; instead you can use the levels and curves graphs which produce better quality photos and adjust the light levels of the photo equally so your photo looks more professional.
Below are my images after using levels and curves to edit them . Also to get them to the size they are we had to use the marquee tool (learnt from Owain's lessons) to surround the area of the photo i wanted and then going on to 'image' and 'crop' to get rid of the unwanted areas of the photo.

Library trip
In our tutorial session with Faye, we printed off our labels and headed down to the library to collect them.We were shown how to use the printers by swiping our cards in the scanner and selecting the document that is available. We were also shown around the library were the black and white and coloured printers are and which sections contain the media books that we will be able to use on our course. We were also asked to find a book and take a photo of it . I chose a photography book and an anime book (Death note). We were to have a look around by ourselves and view the books and Dvd's on offer. We were told basic information such as opening and closing times , how much printing credit we get and how many books we can take out (including when we will have to return them by).
Photoshop - (Choosing Fonts) and designing a label
Today in our first session with Owain , we went on to the website DAfont.com and chose 3-5 ,or more fonts that would be suitable for our video advertisement product label. We did this by typing in our product name , choosing the fonts and then print screening these .Then i pasted them onto Photoshop , used the marquee tool to crop them and then saved this file as a JPEG.
I think the fonts that i have chosen match the freak or unique theme and will suit my product as they are all a bit strange and 'horror' like. Each font that i have chosen is different and unique. One of these fonts or one of the fonts that my other group members have chosen will be designed as a label onto our shampoo bottle .Again our product will be called 'Good For You Shampoo'. The slogan could also possibly be designed using a similar font. You can also change the colour of these fonts on Photoshop but i have yet to learn that skill.

For the second session , we were asked to design the label for our products.Using Photoshop with the previous skills i had learnt in Owain's lessons we chose a font , pictures off google images and extra information/details.In this case i used ingredients and a bar code for scanning.Discussing with my team we decided upon the dimensions and the idea to put a clown onto the label.I myself have decided to also include a picture of a woman with healthy looking hair which is also the message that we are trying to express throughout the advertisement.I combined the two images to portray a before and after look , as when you have unhealthy looking hair it can make you feel different and even ugly.So my idea is that with this shampoo, it can make you feel more confident about your hair and overall a lot happier with yourself in general.

Storyboard work for video advertisement
Video Advert Proposal
The product we are planning to sell is a brand of shampoo for women. Our idea is to advertise the shampoo using a clown secretly following someone to get the bottle of shampoo. The person wont realise the clown is there until the end when the clown is sat in a public area looking sad . The student/ person then walks over to the clown and hands her the shampoo. The clowns' hair and face then changes back into an ordinary person and then the product will be shown along with the logo at the end. There will be 2 actors throughout the advert. We are aiming our advert at 12 years plus.We might use a ghost effect for the clown.
The props we will need are a green wig, shampoo bottle without the label on, yellow shoes , a clown mask and headphones. The equipment we will need is a camera , tripod , microphone , headphones and an SD card. The locations we have decided upon are the spiral staircase , the corridor next to it and the seating area on E floor. The obstacles we may face by doing this are other students / staff walking past in the areas.Another obstacle could be the sounds that could disturb our filming.
The editing techniques we plan to use are sound effects, music,we may also need to cut some of the footage out to fit the 15-30 second limit for the overall advert. The music and sounds will add more suspense and emotion to the advert, making it more enjoyable to watch.
The label will have a clown on and maybe a background that is quite dark and mysterious.Along with this will be the Good for you shampoo name and a slogan.

Video advert planning session
We were given the task of coming up with different video advert ideas along with a product and a slogan.
Originally , we wanted to use a McDonald's product and advertise this using an actor dressed up as a clown (me). After discussing this we realised that our original idea would not be individual enough and we wanted to produce something more unique and overall freaky.
We discussed what other products we could possibly advertise and decided upon a bottle of shampoo. Still using the idea of a clown around the college campus , we plan to make it so that another actor (Damon) and me the clown would result in a type of chase around certain areas such as the spiral staircase and other areas on floor E.At the end of this session i (the clown) will end up in the seating area on floor E looking quite sad and lonely and fed up of my hair. This will then result in Damon (college student) walking up to me and handing me a bottle of shampoo.I will then suddenly change as my hair returns to normal and my clown mask has gone.
The name for our product is 'Good For You Shampoo' and the slogan is 'Shampoo that is good for you'. Both catchy and easy to remember.
We plan to use a mix of Mid shots , close ups and wide shots when filming. Also we plan on adding some creepy music or sound effects such as footsteps to add more emotion to the video.
The props we will need for this are a green wig/ green coloured hair spray) , a clown mask , a shampoo bottle , a red nose and finally some yellow shoes . ( i will change back into the shoes i usually wear for the end). Damon will need his phone and headphones as well.
As we changed our original idea , we decided to look for some more inspiration involving the idea of shampoo and hair products. From this we discovered the dove advert 'Girls shampoo isn't made for real men'. This was very inspirational to us as it gave us some more ideas as to using a longer haired/ messed up wig and for different angled shots.
The link for this is below along with pictures of our brainstorms/ notes.

Video Production Groups with Faye
In our first session , we were introduced and placed into our video production groups. There are 3 people in our group consisting of me, Damon and Tom. We Discussed our skills and decided that Damon would be in charge of editing , Tom would be in charge of filming and i would be doing the acting and makeup along with a bit of filming to help.At first we were all quiet and awkward but i think this will fade as we get to know one another better and we actually start to produce the work for the advertisement.
We were asked to find 3 freaky adverts , allowing us to find the inspiration to make our own for the assignment. The three adverts we found were :
- Creepy Ice Cream Commercial ad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx4jEIZyTZU
This advert mainly used a 'close up shot' which gave a creepy and intense effect. The body language of the actor is very intimidating and strange which also makes you want to watch more , for example the eyes were staring directing into the lens. This advertisement uses a voiceover , otherwise known as a non diegetic sound and accompanying this is some background noises which faintly sound like the music from ice cream vans , except the tempo has been slowed down to make it more dramatic and creepy and to also get the viewers attention. Overall the advert appears very direct. The music is in a major key.
-Scary Banned McDonald's ad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob0GbuUr8wc
This advert contains a lot of freaky content . The clown acts very weird but also it could be considered scary to some people. This clown acts very happy , scaring the children and everyone else. It is an old advert advertising McDonald's food. The camera angles are a mix of 'mid-shot' and 'wide shot'.The advertisement uses a non diegetic sound (voice over) along with some background music in a major key.The tempo is quite fast and the music seems energetic and lively.
-Extremely creepy 1960's cereal commercial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2vBJt1iG60
This advert also contains a clown and is quite old fashioned (due to it being from the 1960's). This adds a very eerie effect and in modern times can be considered freaky and unusual.Again the clown acts very overly happy which can creep people out and it definitely is not considered normal. The camera angle seems to mainly be 'mid-shot' throughout. This advertisement uses diegetic sound ; as you can see that the clown is speaking. There is no music, except for a cockerel sound at the start (non diegetic) which symbolises morning/ the start of the day. From this people could guess that it would be a cereal advert.
As individual research i decided to have a look at a couple more freaky advertisements .
- Baby Doll Playstation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqkNPcUMffU
This advert uses multiple types of shots such as mid shot , wide shot and close up. The advert consists of a baby doll and a playstation 3 . The baby almost looks possessed during the advert and i like the use of fire and dramatic occurances in the eyes to give a freaky , dark and weird appearance. This advertisement has a mix of diegetic and non diegetic sounds coming from the baby and the playstation, its a very 'different advertisement'.

Photography research
We were asked to find 10 images that we thought matched the freak or unique brief.
1) This image is very unique and weird.I think it was created by merging together a high heel shoe and someones foot over it.This could be recreated by having someone stand in front of the camera wearing heels , a shot can be taken of one foot in the shoe and then another shot could be taken of the bare foot arched as if in a heel . These two photos could then be merged together.

2) I think this image was created by merging a face , arms/hands and facial features together. It is very odd and definitely matches the freak or unique theme. However i cant really think of an advertisement idea to go with this .
3) I like this image because it focuses on one main aspect of the horse and it looks quite mysterious and Spooky.I also like the fact that there is a limited amount of colour used which makes the photo quite dark it looks very focused. From this photo i think i could take inspiration from the blurred background.
4) This photo overall looks ghostly and faded (as if the horse doesn't exist) .This is the general idea for my advert that i want to recreate.
5) I like the use of colour in this photo , it adds a unique and Halloween touch. This image has been edited to take the original colours out of the photo and add new ones in.
6) From this image i particularly like the black and white effect , also the horse looks like a silhouette which altogether looks spooky.
7) This image was probably made on Photoshop , using model horses or real life horses , followed with a lot of editing to make the bodies look decayed and old .
`
8) I like the mist in this image as it adds a haunted effect. It almost has a sepiatone filter as well , which makes it look old and vintage.
9) This image definitely has that Halloween era about it, making it more suitable for my advertisement , seeing as it is close to Halloween now.The black and white filter , silhouette figures and use of the pumpkin definitely make it freaky.I think this was created by a video and it has been edited so it is constantly on a loop. The setting is in a dark wood /forest and the rider is dressed up. Props used are the pumpkin and clothes.
10) I like how this image focuses on the eye of the horse . I think something individual could be photo shopped into the eye or around it to make it freaky .
